HISTORY ;;
Canti was one in a long line of girls who followed the birth of her parents' beloved, highly exalted son, and she felt it. All attention and love fell to Tarmon, leaving Canti and her sisters to the wayside. Canti saw from a young age that nothing she could ever do would bypass Tarmon's glory, and she could never outshine him, so she resigned herself to never try. Tarmon was in something of a different universe from the sisters, a force unto his own, and so the sisters existed separately from him.
Benedette was graceful, Andrea was pretty, Cavilla was skilled, and Fransisca was sunny, but Canti was really nothing. She found no field to excel in -- not that the others did, either, but nothing to even distinguish herself with. Average in all fields, until she went to begin the customary magic lessons every young noble lady in Dentoria tries, and found that while the others all found the niches in dark, light and elemental magic, she couldn't even manage to pull power from a staff. Teachers all assured her that the magic would come in time, that everything would change as she grew older, but it never did. She learned the bow -- more a lady's weapon that most other choices, at the least -- to try to compensate for this, but it was hardly a replacement for what was certainly seen as one of the defining features of Dentorian noble ladies.
Deeply shamed by what she perceived as a crippling weakness, Canti, knowing she could never strive for excellence in other fields, strove for the only thing she could ever see herself managing to successfully acheieve: forgetability. To make herself hidden in plain sight, invisible because there was nothing about her to remark upon as being out of the ordinary, that was the only way she could hide her embarrasing flaw that was becoming somewhat common knowledge.
She built up propreity and politeness as a shield; doing everything exactly as it should be done until the face that she showed was nothing more than a charm school textbook incarnate.
She still knows no magic, she is still nothing remarkable next to her sisters, and she still levels firmly into Tarmon's dominating shadow. This all bothers her very much. But you would never know it.
PERSONALITY ;;
Canti once heard the saying "courtesy is a lady's armour," and she remembered it forever. It has become the most important phrase of her life. She hides weakness, doubts, and low self esteem behind a mask of plastic courtesy that doesn't seem anything but forgettable. Canti does not seem "perfectly" polite, because she never goes above and beyond; indeed, she's careful not to. Nor does she seem lacking in any way. It's a delicate balance.
Most people who meet Canti find her a kind, polite, proper, pleasant young woman who they enjoy spending time with. However, when asked to describe her, they find they have a difficult time doing so. Polite, yes, she was very polite, but beyond that, she shows no personality, completely envelopped by courtesy.
Canti loves literature and poetry, and may have ended up being somewhat known for how cleverly she understands it, if she hadn't have discovered this passions after she'd already begun to build her armour. Now, she keeps her love to read mostly to herself.
She hates that she can't use magic, and she hates that she doesn't stand apart from her sisters. She hates that she has to hide herself like this to keep herself safe. She has low self esteem and sees little value in her life. Someone who looked closely enough at her could doubtless see this, as she doesn't hide it especially well when she's not in a setting with her walls up, but, she reasons, she's never given anyone any reason to look.
She keeps a diary closely, where she writes all of her private thoughts, what she truly thinks, all of her doubts and insecurities. She's written in this diary at least once a week since she knew how to spell, and the contents have only become more sad over time.
She feels an affinity to Isanae of Lireth, believing them to be kindred spirits of sorts due to their similar problems. She has no idea of Isanae's true nature.
Two-faced? Devious? Secret agenda? No, none of that. Canti is not competant or clever or ambitious. Her mask is not one that exists to hide her true self, nor is it one to force others to underestimate her. She is just a young woman who would rather be forgotten than remembered for the wrong reasons.
APPEARANCE ;;
Canti has long, golden hair, big blue eyes, and a pretty, youthful face. She's average height for the Northern Lady, though slightly more slender. While certainly an attractive woman for the every day citizen, she's only average for a member of the nobility.
